County Carlow Football Club

County Carlow Football Club is a rugby club in Carlow, County Carlow, Ireland. The club was founded in October 1873, and is one of the oldest rugby clubs in Ireland. As was usual in the days preceding the development of Gaelic Football and Soccer and prior to the foundation of the Rugby Football Union, the earlier clubs were known simply as Football Clubs with no mention of rugby in the title. The Co. Carlow club was formed, therefore, (and is correctly known) as "Co. Carlow Football Club." Other clubs with this distinction include Dublin University FC - founded in 1854; Queen's University (1869); Wanderers FC (1870); Lansdowne FC (1872) and Garryowen FC (1884).

Famous quotes containing the words county, football and/or club:

Hold hard, my county darlings, for a hawk descends,
Golden Glamorgan straightens, to the falling birds.
Your sport is summer as the spring runs angrily.
    Dylan Thomas (1914–1953)

... in the minds of search committees there is the lingering question: Can she manage the football coach?
    Donna E. Shalala (b. 1941)

The barriers of conventionality have been raised so high, and so strangely cemented by long existence, that the only hope of overthrowing them exists in the union of numbers linked together by common opinion and effort ... the united watchword of thousands would strike at the foundation of the false system and annihilate it.
