Conversion of Non-Christian Places of Worship Into Churches

The Conversion of non-Christian places of worship into churches occurred early in the history of Christianity and continued during subsequent Christian conquests and Christianization. As a result, numerous Greek, Roman Temples, Mosques, synagogues, the Parthenon and Buddhist temples were converted into Churches. Several such Churches in Christian or ex-Christian lands have since reverted or become museums, such as the Ketchaoua Mosque in Algeria and Tsisdarakis Mosque used as a museum in Greece.

... it would be impossible for women to stand in higher estimation than they do here. The deference that is paid to them at all times and in all places has often occasioned me as much surprise as pleasure.

It is not enough for us to prostrate ourselves under the tree which is Creation, and to contemplate its tremendous branches filled with stars. We have a duty to perform, to work upon the human soul, to defend the mystery against the miracle, to worship the incomprehensible while rejecting the absurd; to accept, in the inexplicable, only what is necessary; to dispel the superstitions that surround religion—to rid God of His Maggots.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)

The churches ... have lost much of their authority over youth because they have refused to re-examine their religious sanctions and their dogmatic preaching in the light of modern physiology, psychology and sociology.
    Agnes E. Meyer (1887–1970)
