Constable Care

Constable Care is a community awareness mascot originally used by the Western Australia Police to inform primary school children about basic safety issues. Now he is a part of a non-profit organisation, the Constable Care Child Safety Foundation, sponsored by the Perth Sunday Times newspaper.

Constable Care was originated in 1984 by a member of the New South Wales Police Force Safety Advisory Section, Wayne Hodges. The concept was adopted in the late 1980s by the Western Australia Police and the West Australian newspaper which published each day a less-than-poetic rhyming couplet under Constable Care's byline, encouraging younger readers to be safety-conscious and civic-minded. Since moving to a different newspaper, Constable Care has lost his former moustache and his face is now less angular.

Constable Care is a not for profit community based foundation working in partnership with the Western Australia Police and primary schools across the State with the specific focus on teaching children about safety, crime prevention and the promotion of respect and responsibility. Constable Care is a nationally registered charity and specialises in the area of early intervention life skills education. The focus is aimed at protecting our next generation and "Teaching Kids To Do The Right Thing".

The Constable Care Child Safety Foundation travels around Western Australia to perform interactive plays and puppet shows. Based in Maylands WA, they travel the state visiting over 500 schools a year including remote indigenous community schools. The performances are suited to school kids from kindergarten to Year 7 and cover topics such as bullying, health and hygiene, substance use/abuse, graffiti, anti-social behavior, vandalism, stealing, stranger danger, road safety, personal responsibility and the four kinds of respect - respect for yourself, respect for other people, respect for property and respect for the environment.

Australian TV Host Rove McManus was once a Constable Care performer.

Famous quotes containing the words constable and/or care:

This ferry was as busy as a beaver dam, and all the world seemed anxious to get across the Merrimack River at this particular point, waiting to get set over,—children with their two cents done up in paper, jail-birds broke lose and constable with warrant, travelers from distant lands to distant lands, men and women to whom the Merrimack River was a bar.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Feeling needy—mistaking vulnerability for weakness—doesn’t fit in with our image of what being a mother is all about. If we are needy, how can we care well for a much needier baby? There is a widespread feeling that we have to do it all alone, and if we don’t know something, or can’t manage it, or, heaven forbid, don’t want to, there is something lacking in our makeup.
    Sally Placksin (20th century)
