The Common Gallinule, (Gallinula galeata) is a bird in the Rallidae family which has recently been split from the Common Moorhen by the American Ornithologists' Union in July 2011. It lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals and other wetlands. The species is not found in the polar regions, or many tropical rainforests. But elsewhere the Common Gallinule is likely the most commonly seen rail species in much of North America, excepting the American Coot in some regions.

Famous quotes containing the word common:
“Freedom of men under government is to have a standing rule to live by, common to every one of that society, and made by the legislative power vested in it; a liberty to follow my own will in all things, when the rule prescribes not, and not to be subject to the inconstant, unknown, arbitrary will of another man.”
—John Locke (16321704)
