Commander-in-chief - Australia

Australia

Under chapter II of section 68 titled Command of the naval and military forces, the Constitution of Australia states that: "The commander in chief of the naval and military forces of the Commonwealth is vested in the Governor General as the Queen's representative."

The current Queen of Australia is HM Queen Elizabeth II and the current Governor General is Her Excellency Quentin Bryce.

In practice, however, the Governor-General does not play an active part in the ADF's command structure, and the elected Australian Government controls the ADF. The Minister for Defence and several subordinate ministers exercise this control.

Famous quotes containing the word australia:

It is very considerably smaller than Australia and British Somaliland put together. As things stand at present there is nothing much the Texans can do about this, and ... they are inclined to shy away from the subject in ordinary conversation, muttering defensively about the size of oranges.
Alex Atkinson, British humor writer. repr. In Present Laughter, ed. Alan Coren (1982)

I like Australia less and less. The hateful newness, the democratic conceit, every man a little pope of perfection.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)
