Open-source Reimplementations
Just like its predecessor Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert attracted many Game engine recreation attempts which share source code because the file formats and gameplay mechanics are very similar. FreeRA is an Open Source clone written in C++ and Lua using the SDL libraries that is not developed anymore. A modern reimplementation of the engine in C# and YAML called OpenRA allows high screen resolutions. It uses the original game graphics, but is rebalanced and optimized for multiplayer matches. The graphical user interface uses a Red Alert 3 style tabbed menu, unit movement lines as in Tiberian Sun and a live map as the main-menu background like C&C: Generals. It also features capturable oil derricks that generate income over time as a new game-play element inspired by Generals and adds new units such as a flak truck like the one in Red Alert 2. It is also highly moddable.
