Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal

The Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal was established in 1976 by Admiral Owen W. Siler, USCG and is awarded to any member of the United States Coast Guard who performs twenty one days of consecutive duty afloat or ashore north of the Arctic Circle.

The decoration is also authorized for personnel who serve on remote stations in certain areas of Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, and Norway. For flight personnel, the decoration is authorized for twenty one flight days above the Arctic Circle.

The Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal may also be awarded, on a case by case basis, to non-Coast Guard personnel who perform significant duties in support of Coast Guard missions within the Arctic region.

The decoration is retroactive to 1946. The medal is also provided as a one time issuance only, and there are no devices authorized for additional periods of Arctic service beyond the minimum twenty one days.

The United States Navy equivalent to the Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal is the Navy Arctic Service Ribbon.

Famous quotes containing the words coast, guard, arctic and/or service:

Too many Broadway actors in motion pictures lost their grip on success—had a feeling that none of it had ever happened on that sun-drenched coast, that the coast itself did not exist, there was no California. It had dropped away like a hasty dream and nothing could ever have been like the things they thought they remembered.
    Mae West (1892–1980)

We must be cruel as well as compassionate: let us guard against becoming poorer than nature is!
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

Nature confounds her summer distinctions at this season. The heavens seem to be nearer the earth. The elements are less reserved and distinct. Water turns to ice, rain to snow. The day is but a Scandinavian night. The winter is an arctic summer.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Human life consists in mutual service. No grief, pain, misfortune, or “broken heart,” is excuse for cutting off one’s life while any power of service remains. But when all usefulness is over, when one is assured of an unavoidable and imminent death, it is the simplest of human rights to choose a quick and easy death in place of a slow and horrible one.
    Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935)
