Clan Maxwell were a very powerful Lowland Border Family that in spite of the fact they were named as a clan, organised themselves as one of the great noble Houses of Scotland. One distinguished member of the Family Robert Maxwell, 5th Lord Maxwell had the great honour of being elected a member of the council of Regency of the Kingdom of Scotland (1536). Other titles of great esteem held by different members over the centuries include: Regent of Arran, Warden of the West Marches, Earl of Morton, Earl of Nithsdale, Lord Maxwell, and Lord Herries. This Scottish clan does not currently have a chief therefore it is considered an Armigerous clan.
