The clan continues to have as its leader the current clan commander, Iain Alexander Gunn Of Banniskirk; his Uncle was the first commander appointed in modern times.
In 2012 there was a petition before the Lord Lyon arguing for a Family Convention to convert the current Commander to Chief. The petition has been refused by Lord Lyon as 'it has become evident that there are in all probability clear and provable lines of descent senior to the present Commander'. Since earlier comments which quoted more of the text of the Lord Lyon's statement have been deleted, it is recommnded that the reader go to the Lyon's web site to see the full text of his statement which does not shut the door to a family convention in finality at all.
