On 18 May 1993, the City was abolished, and under the City of Greater Geelong Act 1993 merged into the City of Greater Geelong with the Cities of Geelong West and Newtown, the Rural City of Bellarine, the Shire of Corio, part of the City of South Barwon and parts of the Shires of Barrabool and Bannockburn.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

... in a history of spiritual rupture, a social compact built on fantasy and collective secrets, poetry becomes more necessary than ever: it keeps the underground aquifers flowing; it is the liquid voice that can wear through stone.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

American time has stretched around the world. It has become the dominant tempo of modern history, especially of the history of Europe.
    Harold Rosenberg (1906–1978)

I believe that in the history of art and of thought there has always been at every living moment of culture a “will to renewal.” This is not the prerogative of the last decade only. All history is nothing but a succession of “crises”Mof rupture, repudiation and resistance.... When there is no “crisis,” there is stagnation, petrification and death. All thought, all art is aggressive.
    Eugène Ionesco (b. 1912)
