Christian Estrosi

A prominent French politician born in Nice on 1 July 1955. Since 1988, he has been elected repeatedly a member of the French Parliament (National Assembly of France). He was also elected in 2002 President of the General Council for the Alpes-Maritimes département, a post he held until December 2008.

In 2008 he was elected Mayor of Nice. He remains the current Mayor until the next elections due in 2014. With the creation and establishment of the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur http://www.nicecotedazur.org on 1 January 2012, he was also elected President of this new entity and territory. This territory of 1 400 km² located in the heart of the Euro Mediterranean arc, extending from the Mediterranean coast to the Mercantour summits, encompasses 46 municipalities and over 550,000 inhabitants. The Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur is aiming in this ambitious project in sustainable development, to combine innovation with la ‘dolce vita’, to rely on significant and budding sectors such as new and clean technologies, sustainable development, the environment and healthcare.

In addition, Christian Estrosi has held several Ministerial positions in the French government in Paris. Firstly, he was appointed on 2 June 2005 Minister in charge of Town and Country Planning and Development. He was then appointed on 19 June 2007, the Minister in charge of the Overseas French territories (DOM-TOM). His third post was as Minister in charge of Industry from 23 June 2009.

Prior to his career in politics, Christian Estrosi was a well-known motorcyclist and competed in many Grand Prix. His best result was a fourth place finish in the 1978 500cc French motorcycling Grand Prix.
