Chris Thorman - Childhood

Childhood

Thorman grew up in Wallsend in Tyne and Wear. He went to Western First School, Western Middle School and then onto Burnside Community High School (now known as Burnside Business and Enterprise College), where he was friends with current England football international Michael Carrick.

His first rugby club was Newcastle Eagles (now known as Wallsend Eagles) where he played with his younger brothers, Paul and Neil, as a youngster under the watchful eye of Simon Wilkinson, the club's head coach. He was discovered by a scout and sent to regional camps and other rugby league trials. Playing for more and more scouts discovered the potential the young man had. At 16, he made his professional debut playing for the Sheffield Eagles.

Famous quotes containing the word childhood:

We find that even the parents who justify spanking to themselves are defensive and embarrassed about it....I suspect that deep in the memory of every parent are the feelings that had attended his own childhood spankings, the feelings of humiliation, of helplessness, of submission through fear. The parent who finds himself spanking his own child cannot dispel the ghosts of his own childhood.
    Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)

Ah happy hills! ah pleasing shade!
    Ah fields beloved in vain!
Where once my careless childhood stray’d,
    Thomas Gray (1716–1771)

I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.
    Sigmund Freud (1856–1939)
