In four years at Michigan, he totaled 623 yards rushing on 148 carries and added 125 yards receiving on 14 receptions. As a fullback he did not carry the ball frequently and only totaled more than 10 carries in two ball games. In the 1997 championship season, he was the blocking back for rushing leader Chris Howard and freshman Anthony Thomas. He also protected 1997 starting quarterback Brian Griese. The undefeated 12-0 1997 Michigan Wolverines football team emphasized defense behind 1997 Heisman Trophy winning defensive back Charles Woodson.
