Chicken Sandwich

A chicken sandwich is typically a boneless, skinless, breast of chicken in a bun or between two slices of bread.

The breast of chicken can be prepared by the following methods:

  • Battering and frying the breast (this type of treatment is most prevalent, as it can use various parts of the breast rather than a whole piece of chicken breast meat)
  • Grilling the breast plain
  • Basted or marinated

The usual condiments of choice are barbecue sauce, honey mustard, mayonnaise, or chipotle and sweet chilli sauce. The usual toppings are lettuce and tomato. Many restaurants may add bacon, or cheese, such as Swiss, American, Cheddar, provolone, or pepper Jack. Other toppings include: guacamole or plain avocado, sauteed mushrooms, grilled onions, pickles, or grilled pineapple.

Chick-fil-A claims that it was the first restaurant to serve a chicken sandwich, although there is no evidence to support this claim. The chain's sandwich is served plain with only pickles on the bun with the fried chicken breast, because when Truett Cathy first served his "invention" to customers, the only condiments he had on hand were pickles.

Famous quotes containing the words chicken and/or sandwich:

Clogged and soft and sloppy eyes
Have lost the light that bites or terrifies.
There are no swans and swallows any more.
The people settled for chicken and shut the door.
    Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)

I would fain say something, not so much concerning the Chinese and Sandwich Islanders as you who read these pages, who are said to live in New England; something about your condition, especially your outward condition or circumstances in this world, in this town, what it is, whether it is necessary that it be as bad as it is, whether it cannot be improved as well as not.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
