CHS Notable Alumni

Over its 100-year history, Cherryville High School has graduated approximately 7,000 students. Many have established professional careers as educators, ministers, doctors, dentists, lawyers, pharmacists, certified public accountants. Others have distinguished themselves in various sectors of public service, sports, military and business. The following is a partial list of notable CHS graduates.

Hunter Huss and Willard Bess were honored by having schools named for them in Gaston County, North Carolina. Mr. Huss was at one time the Superintendent of Cherryville Public Schools and Superintendent of Gaston County Schools. Vera Black Hoyle, . Long-time faculty member at CHS, teaching English at the high school for 43 years. David R. Mauney Jr. was a local textiles businessman and served a total of 18 years on the Cherryville City School Board and later on the Consolidated Gaston County School Board. Mr. Mauney was a grandson of Mr. S.S. Mauney, the first Cherryville teacher in 1881. "D.R." Mauney was also elected to the North Carolina State Legislature and served on the Gaston College Board of Trustees. Howell W. Stroup, well-known local historian and civic leader in Cherryville and in the Gaston County region. Mr. Stroup served many years on the Cherryville City and Consolidated Gaston County School Boards. Augustus M. (Bud) Black, PhD, Gaston County Commissioner, Educator, University Professor, Fellow U. S. Department of Education, Gaston County Board of Health, College Baseketball Coach, High School Basketball Coach, Dr. Black founded the American School of Real Estate Appraisal, Nationally known consultant of Real Estate Appraising, Doctoral dissertation based on the Cherryville Educational System. Thomas Banks Browne, former CEO and Chair of the Board with Beam Construction Company. Susan Browne Lewis, Mr. Browne's daughter, was named President in 1994. Jerry Helms was also President and Chief Operating Officer of Beam Construction. Max Crowder, trainer with the Duke University basketball staff for over 30 years. Inducted into the Duke University Basketball Hall of Fame. Mel Black Attorney, Order of the Long Leaf Pine, Executive Director of the North Carolina Appraisal Board, Officer of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission, President of National Association of Appraisal Regulatory Officials Dr. Judith Ford Houser, lifelong educator and school administrator and former principal of Cherryville High School. Vello A. Kuuskraa, President of Advanced Resources International Inc. Mr. Kuuskraa is also a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Kenneth Mayhew, former executive with Carolina Freight Carriers Inc. of Cherryville. Robert J. "Bob" Barker, executive with Barker Company of Apex, North Carolina; former North Carolina State Sentator, Mayor and published author. Wallace C. Harrelson, former public defender for Guildford County and elected member of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners. John B. Talbert, former executive with Hanes Corporation of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Guy Eaker considered one of the top bass fishermen in the nation, at one time ranked 7th among the top 100 in the United States. William James Allran, former elected District Attorney and Judge, Gaston County, North Carolina. Harvey Lee Patterson, first African-American student to enroll at Cherryville High School, graduating as class salutatorian. G. Clifton Parker, President and General Manager of G&P Trucking Company, Inc. of South Carolina Calvin Hastings, Radio personality and media industry executive. Rick Willis, Television news reporter, newscast executive producer and director. Dr. Terry Cline, former superintendent of the Lenoir County School System. Tracy Cline, former elected District Attorney, Durham County, North Carolina. Dr. Denise Q. Patterson, assistant superintendent with the Union County Schools. Travis G.
