Famous quotes containing the words heaven and, heaven, earth and/or society:

Bed is the poor man’s opera.
Italian proverb, quoted in Aldous Huxley, Heaven and Hell (1956)

    Not in Utopia,—subterranean Fields,—
Or some secreted Island, Heaven knows where!
But in the very world, which is the world
Of all of us,—the place where in the end
We find our happiness, or not at all!
    William Wordsworth (1770–1850)

If there is anybody in this land who thoroughly believes that the meek shall inherit the earth they have not often let their presence be known.
    —W.E.B. (William Edward Burghardt)

Jail sentences have many functions, but one is surely to send a message about what our society abhors and what it values. This week, the equation was twofold: female infidelity twice as bad as male abuse, the life of a woman half as valuable as that of a man. The killing of the woman taken in adultery has a long history and survives today in many cultures. One of those is our own.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
