Cebrenia Quadrangle - Volcano Ice Interactions

Volcano Ice Interactions

Large amounts of water ice are believed to be present under the surface of Mars. Some channels lie near volcanic areas. When hot subsurface molten rock comes close to this ice, large amounts of liquid water and mud may be formed. Hrad Valles in the Cebrenia quadrangle is close to Elysium Mons, a large volcano, and may have supplied water to create the channel. Hrad Valles is pictured below.

  • Hrad Valles may have been formed when the large Elysium Mons volcanic complex melted ground ice, as seen by THEMIS.

  • Streamlined islands in Hrad Valles, as seen by HiRISE.

Famous quotes containing the words volcano, ice and/or interactions:

It would be idle to say that we were not, from time to time, aware that a volcano slumbered fitfully beneath us. There were dark sides to the Slavery Question, for master, as for slave.
    Marion Harland (1830–1922)

Like the water, the Walden ice, seen near at hand, has a green tint, but at a distance is beautifully blue, and you can easily tell it from the white ice of the river, or the merely greenish ice of some ponds, a quarter of a mile off.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The exercise of power is determined by thousands of interactions between the world of the powerful and that of the powerless, all the more so because these worlds are never divided by a sharp line: everyone has a small part of himself in both.
    Václav Havel (b. 1936)
