The Mau Mau Torture Hearings in The UK and It's Outcome

In 2009 three former Mau Mau fighters (Paulo Muoka Nzili, Wambuga Wa Nyingi and Jane Muthoni Mara) filed papers to take the British government for alleged abuses by the colonial government during the Mau Mau uprising. The claimants' lawyers alleged that Mr Nzili was castrated, Mr Nyingi severely beaten and Mrs Mara subjected to appalling sexual abuse in detention camps during the rebellion.

In 2011 the High court ruled that the petitioners had an arguable case. In July 2012 during hearings the British government accepted in court that colonial forces in Kenya tortured and abused detainees during the Mau Mau rebellion. In October 2012 the UK High Court ruled that the three claimants can proceed with their legal claims against the UK government despite the time elapsed.

Famous quotes containing the words torture, hearings and/or outcome:

I assess the power of a will by how much resistance, pain, torture it endures and knows how to turn to its advantage.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

Aged ears play truant at his tales,
And younger hearings are quite ravished,
So sweet and voluble is his discourse.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

It is always the moralists who do the most harm. Abortion is the logical outcome of civilization, only the jungle gives birth and moulders away as nature decrees. Man plans.
    Max Frisch (1911–1991)
