Carl Albert - Enters Congress

Enters Congress

Albert was elected to Congress for the first time in 1946. He was a Cold War liberal, and supported President Harry S. Truman's containment of Soviet expansionism and domestic measures like public housing, federal aid to education, and farm price supports. He was appointed House Majority Whip in 1955 and was elected House Majority Leader in 1961.

Albert was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1957.

Famous quotes containing the words enters and/or congress:

No ear may hear His coming,
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him still,
    The dear Christ enters in.
    Phillips Brooks (1835–1893)

What Congress and the popular sentiment approve is rarely defeated by reason of constitutional objections. I trust the measure will turn out well. It is a great relief to me. Defeat in this way, after a full and public hearing before this [Electoral] Commission, is not mortifying in any degree, and success will be in all respects more satisfactory.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
