Canterbury Rugby Football Union

The Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU) is the governing body for rugby union in a substantial part of the Canterbury region, in the middle of the South Island of New Zealand. Its colours are red and black in a hoop design.

Canterbury's top representative team has won New Zealand's top provincial rugby competition ten times including a "fivepeat" 2008-9-10-11-12, with five in the National Provincial Championship, two in the Air New Zealand Cup, and three in the ITM Cup.

The Canterbury union makes up the base of the Crusaders Super Rugby franchise, who compete in a competition involving New Zealand, Australian and South African based teams.

Famous quotes containing the words canterbury, football and/or union:

    How soon I may ride the whole world about;
    And at the third question thou must not shrink,
    But tell me here truly what I do think.”
    —Unknown. King John and the Abbot of Canterbury (l. 30–32)

    People stress the violence. That’s the smallest part of it. Football is brutal only from a distance. In the middle of it there’s a calm, a tranquility. The players accept pain. There’s a sense of order even at the end of a running play with bodies stewn everywhere. When the systems interlock, there’s a satisfaction to the game that can’t be duplicated. There’s a harmony.
    Don Delillo (b. 1926)

    Our age is pre-eminently the age of sympathy, as the eighteenth century was the age of reason. Our ideal men and women are they, whose sympathies have had the widest culture, whose aims do not end with self, whose philanthropy, though centrifugal, reaches around the globe.
