Candles for Elizabeth is fantasist Caitlin R. Kiernan's first chapbook, released in 1998 by Meisha Merlin Publishing, shortly before the release of Kiernan's debut novel, Silk. It includes an introduction by Poppy Z. Brite. The contents of this chapbook were later incorporated into Kiernan's first short-story collection, Tales of Pain and Wonder. The author provided afterwords for each story, discussing their inspiration. According to Kiernan's online journal (August 3, 2004), the title is a reference to the suicide of a close friend, Elizabeth Tillman Aldrige, in 1995.
Famous quotes containing the words candles for and/or candles:
“how seasonably
leaf and blossom uncurl
and living things arrange their death,
while someone from afar off
blows birthday candles for the world.”
—Irving Layton (b. 1912)
“Chanuka and St. Nicholas Day came almost together this yearjust one days difference. We didnt make much fuss about Chanuka: we just gave each other a few little presents and then we had the candles. Because of the shortage of candles we only had them alight for ten minutes, but it is all right as long as you have the song.”
—Anne Frank (19291945)
