Federally Recognized Tribes
The Cahuilla have been historically divided into "Mountain," "Desert," and "Pass" groups by anthropologists. Today there are nine Southern California reservations that are acknowledged homes to bands of Cahuilla people. These are located in Imperial, Riverside and San Diego counties and are the territory of federally recognized tribes.
The Cahuilla bands (sometimes called "villages") are:
- Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians of the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation
- Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians
- Cabazon Band of Mission Indians
- Cahuilla Band of Mission Indians of the Cahuilla Reservation
- Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians of the Los Coyotes Reservation
- Morongo Band of Cahuilla Mission Indians of the Morongo Reservation
- Ramona Band of Cahuilla Mission Indians
- Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians
- Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians

Famous quotes containing the words federally, recognized and/or tribes:
“If men could menstruate ... clearly, menstruation would become an enviable, boast-worthy, masculine event: Men would brag about how long and how much.... Sanitary supplies would be federally funded and free. Of course, some men would still pay for the prestige of such commercial brands as Paul Newman Tampons, Muhammed Alis Rope-a-Dope Pads, John Wayne Maxi Pads, and Joe Namath Jock ShieldsFor Those Light Bachelor Days.”
—Gloria Steinem (b. 1934)
“By all but the pathologically romantic, it is now recognized that this is not the age of the small man.”
—John Kenneth Galbraith (b. 1908)
“Fashion understands itself; good-breeding and personal superiority of whatever country readily fraternize with those of every other. The chiefs of savage tribes have distinguished themselves in London and Paris, by the purity of their tournure.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
