Israeli Attempt At Pre-publication Censorship Fails
In 1990 Israel tried to stop the sale of the book, by means of a preliminary injunction. This was the first time that a sovereign state tried to stop a book publication in another sovereign state. Lawyers for Israel convinced Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael J. Dontzin to issue the injunction, preventing the publication and distribution of "By Way of Deception." On Sept. 13, less than 48 hours after the injunction was issued, an appeals court threw it out. "By Way of Deception" thus became an instant best seller, reaching #1 on the New York Times best seller list.
