History
For some period, Pune was ruled by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb of Delhi. When Aurangzeb attacked Pune, he inhabited Budhwar Peth in the year 1660. In his era, this Peth was known as Mohitabad or Moheyabad. Thorale Madhavrao Peshwa made developments and renamed it as Budhwar Peth when they got the power in their hand. Vishram baugh Wada, Belbaugh and Gramdevata Jogeshwari are the historical proofs of Budhawar Peth. It is said that when Shivaji got married to Saibai, they first visited Gramdevata Jogeshwari..
The Bhide Wada, located opposite the famous Dagadusheth Halwai Ganapati temple hosted the first school for girls in Maharashtra. The school was started by Savitribai and Jyotiba Phule in January 1848.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“The one duty we owe to history is to rewrite it.”
—Oscar Wilde (18541900)
“In nature, all is useful, all is beautiful. It is therefore beautiful, because it is alive, moving, reproductive; it is therefore useful, because it is symmetrical and fair. Beauty will not come at the call of a legislature, nor will it repeat in England or America its history in Greece. It will come, as always, unannounced, and spring up between the feet of brave and earnest men.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“I believe my ardour for invention springs from his loins. I cant say that the brassiere will ever take as great a place in history as the steamboat, but I did invent it.”
—Caresse Crosby (18921970)
