BTR-D - Development History

Development History

In 1969 the BMD-1 airborne IFV entered service with the Soviet Army. The vehicle had many flaws, but the biggest one was the fact the troop compartment was extremely cramped and could only transport up to four infantrymen; in fact this number was often shortened to three because it was impractical for four infantrymen to operate inside the troop compartment and dismount the vehicle. Because of that in the beginning of 1970s the design bureau of Volgograd Tractor Factory, which designed the BMD-1, began designing an airborne APC based on BMD-1. The prototype was ready in 1974 and in the same year it entered production and service with the Soviet Army as BTR-D.

Famous quotes containing the words development and/or history:

Ultimately, it is the receiving of the child and hearing what he or she has to say that develops the child’s mind and personhood.... Parents who enter into a dialogue with their children, who draw out and respect their opinions, are more likely to have children whose intellectual and ethical development proceeds rapidly and surely.
    Mary Field Belenky (20th century)

Well, for us, in history where goodness is a rare pearl, he who was good almost takes precedence over he who was great.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)
