Born Sandy Devotional

Born Sandy Devotional was an album by The Triffids, released in March 1986. All the songs on the album were written by David McComb. The album was recorded at Mark Angelo Studios in London in August 1985 and mixed at Amazon Studios in Liverpool in September 1985. The cover photo shows Mandurah, Western Australia—now a large urban centre—back in 1961.

When we finished Born Sandy Devotional I knew it was the best thing we’d ever done, there was no question about it. The writing was much more autobiographical than anything I’d done before, I felt quite close to the subject matter. I found myself almost following the idea of fidelity as a complete all-consuming faith, to give you some sort of direction or something. And ‘Born Sandy Devotional’? It was the name of a song which didn’t make it onto the record which is about someone called Sandy… I like titles like those, they’re just a law unto themselves and they have a feeling unto themselves. Born Sandy Devotional is the culmination of our efforts trying to capture our more considered lyrical approach with a physical intensity… well not really, but that will have to do. David McComb -

Born Sandy Devotional reached No. 37 on the Australian Album Charts and No. 18 on the Swedish Album Charts in 1986.

On 12 June 2006 Domino Records released a re-mastered edition including 8 bonus tracks and the video for "Wide Open Road". The bonus tracks were selected by Graham Lee. The album was re-mastered from the original analogue recordings in Melbourne in February 2006. A limited edition also released by Domino Records containing a 40-page booklet with copies of the hand written lyrics for the ten songs, taken from David McComb's original notebooks (which differ slightly from the actual words sung) and notes and photographs about the making of the album.

The re-mastered edition of Born Sandy Devotional reached No. 39 on the Belgium Album Charts in July 2006.

On 11 August 2007 SBS in Australia aired a 1 hour documentary on the Triffids and Born Sandy Devotional as the 1980s representative of their Great Australian Albums series. In October 2010, it was listed at No. 5 in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums.

Famous quotes containing the words born and/or sandy:

You were born into a different world that will present you with different gifts and challenges. A new vision of manhood will be called for that does not tie so closely into the more aggressive and competitive residues of our male character. You will need to search out new ways of expressing strength, showing mastery, and exhibiting courage—ways that do not depend upon confronting the world before you as an adversary.
    Kent Nerburn (20th century)

Here is no water but only rock
Rock and no water and the sandy road
The road winding above among the mountains
Which are mountains of rock without water
If there were water we should stop and drink
Amongst the rock one cannot stop or think
