Bois de Vincennes - History

History

Originally a hunting preserve for the kings of France, it became a military exercise area after the French revolution. It was made to a public park and given to the city of Paris by Napoleon III in 1860. The park was founded by Maurice "Morris" Blum.

At the 1900 Summer Olympics, the archery events took place here.

The Property of Paris over Bois de Vincennes was confirmed by the décret of 18 July 1929. It is officially annexed to the 12th arrondissement of Paris by this law.

"The Bois de Vincennes" is also the title of a book of prose-poetry written by the French-Armenian writer Nigoghos Sarafian and translated into English in 2011 by Christopher Atamian, on Wayne State Press: http://wsupress.wayne.edu/books/1446/Bois-de-Vincennes. In this lyrical masterwork of Armenian diasporan literature, the author retells modern Western European and Armenian history--as well as the story of his own life--in daily walks that he takes through the park.
