Bob Christo - Career

Career

Born in Sydney, Australia, Christo was a qualified civil engineer from Sydney. Known for his brawny physique and skinheaded look, Bob came to Mumbai whilst awaiting a work permit to work in Muscat. It is there he met actress Parveen Babi who recommended him his first steps into the world of Hindi films.

He received his first break, as a type-casted villain in the Hindi movie Abdullah in 1980. Christo decided to stay in India and appeared in over 200 movies in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. His film career had restricted him to typecasted roles as an atagonist to the main villain, or a British Indian army officer in pre-war related movies.

He had appeared in many of Amitabh Bachchan's hit movies in the 80's and early 90's including Mard, Kaalia, Geraftaar, Agneepath, Toofan, Jaadugar etc. to name a few. Amitabh Bachchan's famous dialogue 'Hum Jahan Khade hote hain line wahin se shuru hoti hai' (The queue starts from where I stand) was actully mouthed first by Bob Christo in the movie. It is only after him Bachchan says his lines.

During later stages of his life, he shifted to Bangalore in early 2000, where he started working as a Yoga instructor and remained inactive from the Hindi movie industry from 2003. Partly due to how little is known about him and partly due to the number of movies in which he has appeared, Bob Christo has a cult following of sorts, with a website dedicated to him at bollybob. On 17 June 2008, Adil Ray officially announced, as part of the BBC Asian Network's Bollywood month, that he was going to search for the legend Bob. However, he was unsuccessful.

The 72-year-old actor died of "rupture of left ventricle free valve" in Bangalore on 20 March 2011. Tributes poured from all over India.

Famous quotes containing the word career:

I began my editorial career with the presidency of Mr. Adams, and my principal object was to render his administration all the assistance in my power. I flattered myself with the hope of accompanying him through [his] voyage, and of partaking in a trifling degree, of the glory of the enterprise; but he suddenly tacked about, and I could follow him no longer. I therefore waited for the first opportunity to haul down my sails.
    William Cobbett (1762–1835)

The 19-year-old Diana ... decided to make her career that of wife. Today that can be a very, very iffy line of work.... And what sometimes happens to the women who pursue it is the best argument imaginable for teaching girls that they should always be able to take care of themselves.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)

A black boxer’s career is the perfect metaphor for the career of a black male. Every day is like being in the gym, sparring with impersonal opponents as one faces the rudeness and hostility that a black male must confront in the United States, where he is the object of both fear and fascination.
    Ishmael Reed (b. 1938)
