Black Peas - Consumption

Consumption

Black peas are commonly found at fairgrounds and mobile food counters. They are traditionally eaten from a cup with salt and vinegar. They can be served hot or cold, the former being especially so in the winter months. At fairgrounds they were traditionally served in white porcelain mugs and eaten with a spoon. In more recent years they are served in thick white disposable cups. Many people fail to re-create the same taste black peas provide when bought at a funfair. In Preston parched peas are sold ready cooked and served in brown paper bags still on the Flag Market, an autumn delicacy.

To expect to increase prices and then to maintain them at a higher level by means of a plan which must of necessity increase production while decreasing consumption is to fly in the face of an economic law as well established as any law of nature.

Daily life is governed by an economic system in which the production and consumption of insults tends to balance out.
    Raoul Vaneigem (b. 1934)

The basis on which good repute in any highly organized industrial community ultimately rests is pecuniary strength; and the means of showing pecuniary strength, and so of gaining or retaining a good name, are leisure and a conspicuous consumption of goods.
    Thorstein Veblen (1857–1929)
