Bird Egg - Size

Size

Egg size tends to be proportional to the size of the adult bird, from the half gram egg of the Bee Hummingbird to the 1.5kg egg of the Ostrich. Kiwis have disproportionately large eggs, upto 20% of the females body weight. This evolutionary trait results in kiwi chicks that can emerge from the nest days after hatching, ready to start foraging for food.

Famous quotes containing the word size:

For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
    Bible: New Testament, Matthew 17:20.

Beauty depends on size as well as symmetry. No very small animal can be beautiful, for looking at it takes so small a portion of time that the impression of it will be confused. Nor can any very large one, for a whole view of it cannot be had at once, and so there will be no unity and completeness.
    Aristotle (384 B.C.–322 B.C.)

Learn to shrink yourself to the size of the company you are in. Take their tone, whatever it may be, and excell in it if you can; but never pretend to give the tone. A free conversation will no more bear a dictator than a free government will.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)
