Hull worked at the Harland and Wolff engine shop in Belfast, and became the convenor of shop stewards there. A supporter of working class and trade union politics Hull became a member of the Northern Ireland Labour Party in 1948. He maintained his membership of the party until the early 1970s when he resigned in protest at the Northern Ireland policy of the Harold Wilson and the British Labour Party.

Famous quotes related to early years:
“Even today . . . experts, usually male, tell women how to be mothers and warn them that they should not have children if they have any intention of leaving their side in their early years. . . . Children dont need parents full-time attendance or attention at any stage of their development. Many people will help take care of their needs, depending on who their parents are and how they chose to fulfill their roles.”
—Stella Chess (20th century)
