Bernard won the 2006 Sigerson Cup with DCU, he scored one point in the game against QUB. He was on the 2006 Plunketts team that won the Dublin Division Two League title with a win over Garda. Brogan was named on the 2006 Dublin Bus/Evening Herald Blue Star football XV at left corner forward.

Bernard scored his first point for Dublin in 2007 against Fermanagh in the NFL. Bernard made his championship debut for Dublin by coming on as a late substitute in Dublins quarter final victory over neighbours.Meath. He made his first start for Dublin against Offaly, and was substituted in the 45th minute in Dublin's semi final victory over Offaly. Brogan regained his position for Dublin against Laois and scored 1-01 in Dublins 3-14 to 1-14 Leinster title winning game against Laois in Croke Park. Along with his brother Alan, was nominated for All Star award in 2007 in the half forward division.

In 2008 Bernard won the Dublin AFL Division 1 title with his club St Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruadh scoring a goal and five points in the final. It was the first league title in the clubs history. Bernard was on Dublins winning team for the 2008 O'Byrne Cup winning team which defeated Longford in the final. Bernard scored a total of 0-07 in the final at Parnell Park.

In 2009 Brogan played an important part as Dublin again won the Leinster championship. However, they were beaten by Kerry in the All-Ireland quarter-final. After an exceptional season for Dublin on the full forward line in 2010, Bernard was awarded an all star and was named as the Vodafone Footballer of the year for 2010.
