Benedict Joseph Fenwick - Early Life and Education

Early Life and Education

Benedict Fenwick was born in Leonardtown, Maryland, to George and Margaret (née Medley) Fenwick. His ancestors were originally from Northumberland in North East England. Benedict's great-great-great grandfather, Cuthbert Fenwick, immigrated to the United States in 1633 aboard the Ark and the Dove, and was one of the original Catholic settlers of Maryland. He entered Georgetown College in 1793, and graduated with high honors. He afterwards served as a professor at Georgetown before deciding to study for the priesthood, entering St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore in 1805. Following the restoration of the Society of Jesus, he joined its novitiate in 1806.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or education:

When lilacs last in the dooryard bloomed
And the great star early drooped in the western sky in the night,
I mourned, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.
Ever-returning spring, trinity sure to me you bring,
Lilac blooming perennial and drooping star in the west,
And thought of him I love.
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

There is in him, hidden deep-down, a great instinctive artist, and hence the makings of an aristocrat. In his muddled way, held back by the manacles of his race and time, and his steps made uncertain by a guiding theory which too often eludes his own comprehension, he yet manages to produce works of unquestionable beauty and authority, and to interpret life in a manner that is poignant and illuminating.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

... the physical and domestic education of daughters should occupy the principal attention of mothers, in childhood: and the stimulation of the intellect should be very much reduced.
    Catherine E. Beecher (1800–1878)
