Ben Davidson - Life and Career

Life and Career

Davidson was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Avis (née Wheat) and Benjamin Franklin Davidson. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School in the El Sereno neighborhood of Los Angeles, but did not play football in high school; because of his height (6 feet 8 inches), basketball was more to his liking. While attending East Los Angeles Community College, he was spotted by the football coach and asked to join the team. He was subsequently recruited to play at the University of Washington where he flourished as a member of two Rose Bowl winning teams and gained entry into professional football.

Davidson played in the National Football League in his rookie year for the 1961 champion Green Bay Packers. He then played with the Washington Redskins in 1962 and 1963.

Davidson most notably played in the American Football League with the Oakland Raiders from 1964 through 1969, and for the NFL Raiders from 1970 through 1972, when the NFL and AFL were merged.

He was an AFL All-Star in 1966, 1967, and 1968. In the mid 1970s, he also played for the Portland Storm in the World Football League .

The 19-year-old Diana ... decided to make her career that of wife. Today that can be a very, very iffy line of work.... And what sometimes happens to the women who pursue it is the best argument imaginable for teaching girls that they should always be able to take care of themselves.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
