As per provisional 2011 India census,Belgaum Urban Agglomeration. Although Belgaum city has population of 488,292; its urban / metropolitan population is 510,189. with males constituting 51% (309,689) of the population and females 49% (300,500), Belgaum has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 65%; with 54% of the males and 46% of females literate. Eleven percent of the population is under 6 years of age. The two main languages spoken in this city are Marathi and Kannada, spoken by about 50% and 30% of the population of Belgaum City, respectively. There are also Konkani and Urdu speakers in this city. Hindi and English is also spoken here.
