Belgaum - Border Dispute

Border Dispute

With the passage of the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, which reorganised India's states along linguistic lines, Belgaum was incorporated into the newly formed Mysore state (now Karnataka), despite the high proportion of Marathi speakers, who accounted for about three quarters of the total population at the time. Since then, Maharashtra has continued to claim the district, and the case is now in Supreme Court of India.

“Although our love is waning, let us stand
By the lone border of the lake once more,
Together in that hour of gentleness
When the poor tired child, Passion, falls asleep....”

The king said, -Divide the living boy in two; then give half to the one, and half to the other. But the woman whose son was alive said to the king -because compassion for her son burned within her - -Please, my lord, give her the living boy; certainly do not kill him! The other said, -It shall be neither mine nor yours; divide it. Then the king responded: -Give the first woman the living boy; do not kill him. She is his mother.
