BBC North West

BBC North West is the BBC English Region serving Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, the Isle of Man (itself not, in fact, part of England), southern Cumbria, Walsden in West Yorkshire, north-west Derbyshire and parts of the Yorkshire Dales (Settle & Ribblesdale).

The region also covered the rest of Cumbria during the late 1980s, complete with an opt-out television news service for the area, before it was transferred to the BBC North East region owing to high viewer demand.

Famous quotes containing the words bbc, north and/or west:

To err is human, but to really foul things up requires a computer.
—Anonymous. quoted in “Quote Unquote,” Feb. 22, 1982, BBC Radio 4.

So-called Western Civilization, as practised in half of Europe, some of Asia and a few parts of North America, is better than anything else available. Western civilization not only provides a bit of life, a pinch of liberty and the occasional pursuance of happiness, it’s also the only thing that’s ever tried to. Our civilization is the first in history to show even the slightest concern for average, undistinguished, none-too-commendable people like us.
    —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

There are acacias, a graceful species amusingly devitalized by sentimentality, this kind drooping its leaves with the grace of a young widow bowed in controllable grief, this one obscuring them with a smooth silver as of placid tears. They please, like the minor French novelists of the eighteenth century, by suggesting a universe in which nothing cuts deep.
    —Rebecca West (1892–1983)
