The game is set in the early 21st century during a fictional world war between various power blocs: the United States aided by the European Union (playable as of the 1.50 patch), the United Kingdom, and the Russian Federation (playable only as Spetsnaz in the Special Forces expansion) at war against China aided and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC) aided by various insurgent groups.

There is no known reason as to how or why the war broke out, though one likely theory is for control of oil reserves. In-game, the European Union and the United States fight China and the MEC. It is mentioned in-game that the US and EU are allies and the EU has negotiated a peace deal with Russia, but it is unknown if China and the MEC are allies. The game also takes place in different fronts, as the Middle East and China are being invaded by US and EU forces, and the United States is being invaded by Chinese and MEC forces.

Famous quotes containing the word plot:

“The plot thickens,” he said, as I entered.
    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930)

After I discovered the real life of mothers bore little resemblance to the plot outlined in most of the books and articles I’d read, I started relying on the expert advice of other mothers—especially those with sons a few years older than mine. This great body of knowledge is essentially an oral history, because anyone engaged in motherhood on a daily basis has no time to write an advice book about it.
    Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)

There comes a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given him to till.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
