Bates Mill - Today

Today

Currently, the rehabilitated Bates Mill Complex is the site of TD Bank and Androscoggin Savings Bank offices, several restaurants, and Museum L-A: The Story of Work and Community in Lewiston-Auburn.

On July 15, 2009, Bates Mill Building No. 5 briefly caught on fire from embers from the nearby Cowan Mill which was completely destroyed by fire. Building No.5, a 356,000-square-foot (33,100 m2) weaving shed, was designed by Albert Kahn and placed in service in 1914. The structure is currently owned by the city of Lewiston, Maine, has been vacant for several years, and is slated for demolition (as of Fall, 2009).

On January 5, 2011, The Lofts at Bates Mill was awarded $5.2 million in low-income housing tax credits by the Maine State Housing Authority to convert Building No. 2 into 48 mixed-income apartments. The $9.2 million project is expected to include 33 subsidized apartments and 15 market-rate apartments. Construction is expected to begin in May or June 2011.

Famous quotes containing the word today:

Indeed, the best books have a use, like sticks and stones, which is above or beside their design, not anticipated in the preface, not concluded in the appendix. Even Virgil’s poetry serves a very different use to me today from what it did to his contemporaries. It has often an acquired and accidental value merely, proving that man is still man in the world.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Farewell? a long farewell to all my greatness.
This is the state of man; today he puts forth
The tender leaves of hopes, tomorrow blossoms,
And bears his blushing honors thick upon him:
The third day comes a frost, a killing frost,
And when he thinks, good easy man, full surely
His greatness is a-ripening, nips his root,
And then he falls as I do.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Man is a question; woman is an answer. The mistake women make today is to offer themselves as answers before being questioned.
    José Bergamín (1895–1983)
