Bank of The West Classic

The Bank of the West Classic is a week-long tennis tournament on the WTA Tour held on the campus of Stanford University in Stanford, California, United States. The 2011 event was held on July 25 to July 31. Started in 1971, the tournament is the oldest women's-only tournament in the world and is played on outdoor hardcourts. It is the first women's tournament in the annual US Open Series.

The tournament started out as the British Motor Cars Invitation in 1971 on the Virginia Slims circuit. Martina Navratilova holds the record for the most singles titles: five (1979–1980, 1988, 1991, and 1993).

Famous quotes containing the words bank, west and/or classic:

It was like passing a boundary to dive
Into the sun-filled water, brightly leafed
And limbed and lighted out from bank to bank.

One perceives that again and again she has destroyed her life when it was forming into shapes of happiness because of her loyalty to the early misery, her conviction that that has the sanction of ultimate reality, and that beside it all other things are trivial.
    —Rebecca West (1892–1983)

Instead of stubbornly attempting to use surrealism for purposes of subversion, it is necessary to try to make of surrealism something as solid, complete and classic as the works of museums.
    Salvador Dali (1904–1989)
