It is located on the N5 National primary road. The town has become a bottleneck on the N5 route in recent years and the opening of the Charlestown bypass down the road has exacerbated the problem. In late 2012, work will start on the town's bypass to the north. Ballaghaderreen was formerly served by rail. The old train station opened on 2 November 1864, but closed permanently on 4 February 1963. Ballaghaderreen is on the main Dublin-Ballina bus route and there are several buses daily serving this route. The nearest railway stations are in Castlerea (21 km) and Boyle (26 km). It is 22 km from Ireland West Airport at Knock.
