Baguley - History

History

Baguley Hall is a 14th century timber-framed manor house that may have replaced an 11th or 12th century house.

Most of Baguley was developed for housing after World War II as part of the Wythenshawe Estate, including many council houses and later tower blocks; Manchester City Council publications refer to Baguley as "one of Europe's biggest housing estates". However, much of the social housing has been sold off under the "Right To Buy" scheme and there are also several private housing developments in the area; and parkland was provided from the start under the development plan.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Revolutions are the periods of history when individuals count most.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)

History is the present. That’s why every generation writes it anew. But what most people think of as history is its end product, myth.
    —E.L. (Edgar Lawrence)

Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we called it the word of a demon than the Word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind.
    Thomas Paine (1737–1809)
