Australian Student Prize

The Australian Student Prize (formerly the Lord Florey Student Prize) is an Australian Government prize which has been awarded annually since 1991 in order to give "national recognition to academic excellence and achievement in secondary education". Five hundred students receive the award each year, which consists of a certificate and cash prize of A$2000.

Each State and Territory Minister for Education nominates a number of students (according to the state or territory's proportion of year 12 students) for the prize each year. Medallists from Australia's teams in the International Biology, Chemistry, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics Olympiads also receive the Australian Student Prize.

Prize winners are announced in the year following their completion of high school, generally in June. Names are printed in various newspapers across Australia, and are posted on the prize's website.

Famous quotes containing the words australian, student and/or prize:

Beyond the horizon, or even the knowledge, of the cities along the coast, a great, creative impulse is at work—the only thing, after all, that gives this continent meaning and a guarantee of the future. Every Australian ought to climb up here, once in a way, and glimpse the various, manifold life of which he is a part.
    Vance Palmer (1885–1959)

When our kids are young, many of us rush out to buy a cute little baby book to record the meaningful events of our young child’s life...But I’ve often thought there should be a second book, one with room to record the moral milestones of our child’s lives. There might be space to record dates she first shared or showed compassion or befriended a new student or thought of sending Grandma a get-well card or told the truth despite its cost.
    Fred G. Gosman (20th century)

Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.
    Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919)
