Australian Book Review - Peter Porter Poetry Prize

Peter Porter Poetry Prize

Australian Book Review established its annual Poetry Prize in 2005, and in 2010 renamed it the Peter Porter Poetry Prize in memory of the Australian poet. The Prize is one of Australia’s most lucrative and respected awards for poetry, and guarantees the winning and short-listed entries wide exposure through publication in ABR.

Entrants must submit a single poem of no more than 100 lines. Multiple entries are permitted, and all poems are judged anonymously.

Famous quotes containing the words peter, porter, poetry and/or prize:

A fanatic is a man that does what he thinks the Lord would do if He knew the facts of the case.
    —Finley Peter Dunne (1867–1936)

Good authors, too, who once knew better words
    Now only use four-letter words
    Writing prose ...
    Anything goes.
    —Cole Porter (1893–1964)

For me being a poet is a job rather than an activity. I feel I have a function in society, neither more nor less meaningful than any other simple job. I feel it is part of my work to make poetry more accessible to people who have had their rights withdrawn from them.
    Jeni Couzyn (b. 1942)

It is impossible to think of Howard Hughes without seeing the apparently bottomless gulf between what we say we want and what we do want, between what we officially admire and secretly desire, between, in the largest sense, the people we marry and the people we love. In a nation which increasingly appears to prize social virtues, Howard Hughes remains not merely antisocial but grandly, brilliantly, surpassingly, asocial. He is the last private man, the dream we no longer admit.
    Joan Didion (b. 1934)
