Australian Amateur

The Australian Amateur is the national amateur golf championship of Australia. It has been played annually since 1894 (except for war years) and is organised by Golf Australia. It is a Golf Australia national ranking event.

Since 1958 it has been played in two stages, a stroke play stage followed by a match play stage. From 1958 to 2005, the winner of the stroke play stage, the medalist, was awarded the Australian Medal. Since 2006, the winner of the stroke play stage is named the Australian Amateur Stroke Play champion.

Famous quotes containing the words australian and/or amateur:

The Australian mind, I can state with authority, is easily boggled.
    Charles Osborne (b. 1927)

I have been reporting club meetings for four years and I am tired of hearing reviews of the books I was brought up on. I am tired of amateur performances at occasions announced to be for purposes either of enjoyment or improvement. I am tired of suffering under the pretense of acquiring culture. I am tired of hearing the word “culture” used so wantonly. I am tired of essays that let no guilty author escape quotation.
Josephine Woodward, U.S. author. As quoted in Everyone Was Brave, ch. 3, by William L. O’Neill (1969)
