Armed Forces Day (Bangladesh)

Armed Forces Day (Bengali: সশস্ত্র বাহিনী দিবস) is observed in Bangladesh on November 21. This signifies the day in 1971, when the members of Army, Navy and Air force of the Bangladesh liberation war forces were fully operational and launched a coordinated offensive against the Pakistani Army. On December 16, 1971, the Pakistan Army surrendered with 93,000 troops to the combined forces, ending the Liberation War of Bangladesh and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 simultaneously.

Famous quotes containing the words armed, forces and/or day:

Behold now this vast city; a city of refuge, the mansion house of liberty, encompassed and surrounded with his protection; the shop of war hath not there more anvils and hammers waking, to fashion out the plates and instruments of armed justice in defence of beleaguered truth, than there be pens and hands there, sitting by their studious lamps, musing, searching, revolving new notions.
    John Milton (1608–1674)

Her wrongs are ... indissolubly linked with all undefended woe, all helpless suffering, and the plenitude of her “rights” will mean the final triumph of all right over might, the supremacy of the moral forces of reason and justice and love in the government of the nation. God hasten the day.
    Anna Julia Cooper (1859–1964)

Any one who knows what the worth of family affection is among the lower classes, and who has seen the array of little portraits stuck over a labourer’s fireplace ... will perhaps feel with me that in counteracting the tendencies, social and industrial, which every day are sapping the healthier family affections, the sixpenny photograph is doing more for the poor than all the philanthropists in the world.
    Macmillan’s Magazine (London, September 1871)
