On February 27, 2004, Shapiro and longtime boyfriend Michael Gottlieb were married at San Francisco City Hall. In 2009, he recorded the song "But Now I'm Back" with Pink Martini on the band's fourth album, Splendor in the Grass. In 2010, he recorded two songs for Pink Martini's holiday album, Joy to the World. He made his live singing debut on September 19, 2009, performing with Pink Martini at the Hollywood Bowl and has performed live with them frequently since then.
