The Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) (Arabic: اتحاد المغرب العربي, Ittiḥād al-Maghrib al-‘Arabī; French: Union du Maghreb arabe or UMA) is a trade agreement aiming for economic and some sort of future political unity among Arab countries of the Maghreb in North Africa: Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.
The union is inactive and frozen due to deep political and economical disagreements between Morocco and Algeria regarding, among others, the issue of Western Sahara.

Famous quotes containing the words arab and/or union:
“As the Arab proverb says, The dog barks and the caravan passes. After having dropped this quotation, Mr. Norpois stopped to judge the effect it had on us. It was great; the proverb was known to us: it had been replaced that year among men of high worth by this other: Whoever sows the wind reaps the storm, which had needed some rest since it was not as indefatigable and hardy as, Working for the King of Prussia.”
—Marcel Proust (18711922)
“Maybe we were the blind mechanics of disaster, but you dont pin the guilt on the scientists that easily. You might as well pin it on M motherhood.... Every man who ever worked on this thing told you what would happen. The scientists signed petition after petition, but nobody listened. There was a choice. It was build the bombs and use them, or risk that the United States and the Soviet Union and the rest of us would find some way to go on living.”
—John Paxton (19111985)
