American Beauty: Original Motion Picture Score

American Beauty: Original Motion Picture Score is the original film score for the 1999 film American Beauty, composed by Thomas Newman.

The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Original Music Score (lost to the score of The Red Violin) and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, and won the Anthony Asquith Award for Film Music in the BAFTA Awards.

The score album won the Grammy Award for the Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or other Visual Media in 2001 which was awarded to producer Bill Bernstein, engineer Dennis Sands, and Newman.

A soundtrack album for the film was also released on October 5, 1999, entitled American Beauty: Music from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. That album includes songs by various artists and two excerpts from the film's score: "Dead Already" and "Any Other Name."

The tracks 'Any Other Name' and 'American Beauty' are widely used in film trailers, and are among the most recognized pieces of film music.

Famous quotes containing the words american, original, motion, picture and/or score:

The quality of American life is an insult to the possibilities of human growth ... the pollution of American space, with gadgetry and cars and TV and box architecture, brutalizes the senses, making gray neurotics of most of us, and perverse spiritual athletes and strident self-transcenders of the best of us.
    Susan Sontag (b. 1933)

If we remembered everything, we should on most occasions be as ill off as if we remembered nothing. It would take us as long to recall a space of time as it took the original time to elapse, and we should never get ahead with our thinking. All recollected times undergo, accordingly, what M. Ribot calls foreshortening; and this foreshortening is due to the omission of an enormous number of facts which filled them.
    William James (1842–1910)

On board ship there are many sources of joy of which the land knows nothing. You may flirt and dance at sixty; and if you are awkward in the turn of a valse, you may put it down to the motion of the ship. You need wear no gloves, and may drink your soda-and-brandy without being ashamed of it.
    Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)

no picture is made to endure nor to live with
but it is made to sell and sell quickly
    with usura, sin against nature,
is thy bread ever more of stale rags
is thy bread dry as paper,
    Ezra Pound (1885–1972)

Gargantua, at the age of four hundred four score and forty- four years begat his son Pantagruel, from his wife, named Badebec, daughter of the King of the Amaurotes in Utopia, who died in child-birth: because he was marvelously huge and so heavy that he could not come to light without suffocating his mother.
    François Rabelais (1494–1553)
