Schwartz's Policy On Veterans
In Schwartz’s first Congress, she introduced legislation to provide credits to businesses that hire unemployed veterans; Schwartz and President Obama later improved on this bill, and the Hiring Our Veterans Act was signed into law November 2011 (Schwartz, 2012). The Hiring Our Veterans Act increased the tax credit for employers that hire veterans with a service connected disability who have been unemployed for six months or more, veterans who have been unemployed for at least four weeks, and veterans, not necessarily with disability, who have been unemployed for at least six months; each tax credit is different depending on the case (Schwartz, 2012). In addition to the Hiring Our Veterans Act, Schwartz also introduced the Servicemembers’ Access to Justice Act in order to combat the job discrimination many veterans face when returning home from serving our country (Schwartz, 2012). Upon returning home, soldiers found that employers were not promptly reinstating their civilian jobs as required by the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (Schwartz, 2012). The legislation Schwartz introduced provides these service members with better protections under law. Schwartz was backed by Senator Bob Casey (PA); Casey introduced this legislation in the Senate on May 23, 2012 (Schwartz, 2012).
